Sushi and Riesling tasting 25th of July 2014
Hosted by David Almeida (Branch Manager) and MasterChef finalist Andrew "Koj" Kojima
The Oxford Wine Company, 20 West Way, Cirencester, GL7 1JA
It was July and we had a promotion in-shop to celebrate the "31 days of German Riesling" in the company. Truth be told, show a bottle of German Riesling to someone and the probabilities of hearing something like "Black Tower", "Blue Nun or "Liebfraumilch" are quite high unfortunately.
These are stories from the past and Germany as a wine producing country has so much to offer (not all white wine either), if people only give it a chance. To promote a German Riesling tasting to the Cirencester crowd was looking like a big challenge. What to do when the "going gets tough"? You call in the "big guns"! It was amazing when Koj (MasterChef finalist) said yes to the idea of a sushi and Riesling tasting. Enough to say that I had the hottest ticket in town and a top class menu:
- Villa Wolf Dry Riesling 2012 stone fruits, texture, crisp and food-friendly. Perfect with Hotate sashimi.
- Leitz Dragonstone 2011 complexity, minerality and aromatic, the ideal partner to Prawn and Salmon Nigiri.
- Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr 2012 this Spatlese was bursting with ripe fruit and balanced acidity. Great with Salmon Teriyaki
- Dr. Loosen Blue Slate Eiswein 2009 dessert not required. It's just like drinking a juicy sweet!
