- This wine is made from grapes grown in the historic Clos Windsbuhl vineyard on stony Muschelkalk (seashell limestone) soil. The history of the vineyard goes back to the 14th century when the Windsbuhl was property of the Habsburgs (Alsace was then part of the
Austro-Hungarian empire). Through history, this vineyard was renowned for the longevity of its wines, mostly due to their tight structures. After two generous vintages it seems that both the Auxerrois (35%) and Chardonnay (65%) vines decided to have a break with considerably lower yields in 2013. As a result of the lower yields the wine has a great concentration with plenty of character and a zesty acidity.
There is always a limestone mineral signature in the wines originating from this vineyard, easy to recognize on both nose and palate. The palate has a delicate mid power structure that opens up quickly. There is a juicy saline acidity increasing in the finish.
- 'Year in, year out, this blend of 65% Chardonnay and 35% Auxerrois always delivers. From grapes that are now 25 years old and farmed organically and biodynamically, this shows gentle tropical, floral and grapefruit notes. Precise and pure lovely weighty texutre and underlying minerality.' - Decanter, March 2018
