- Pinot Bianco, Erste + Neue, Alto Adige, Italy - £17.99
I tasted this Pinot Bianco (or Weissburgunder) recently at a tasting in London and was reminded yet again of how brilliant a wine this is. Subtle, well crafted, with a viscous texture, layered depth of fruit and very good minerality. Long and complex - good wine.
Oliver Zeter Blanc Fumé, Pfalz, Germany - £23.50
This is Sauvignon Blanc but not as we know it Jim. Should the Captain of the Enterprise come across this wine he might well mistake it for an alien life form - albeit a benign one. For a start it's made in Germany, which is unusual, then there's the fact that it sees a tiny fraction of oak - but don't worry, it hardly notices on the wine. And then there's the aspect of it being so beautifully delicate and elegantly aromatic on the nose that you just can't wait to dive into it. Superb wine from a uniquely gifted winemaker.
Kleine Zalze Chenin, Stellenbosch, South Africa - £23.95
South Africa continues to go from strength to strength as the young winemakers who returned from making vintages in the Old World make their mark with their own experimental styles of winemaking. Personally, I love the Chenin Blanc grape from the Loire, and also am very partial to it when it's from South Africa. A total delight.
Furst Tradition Pinot Noir, Franken, Germany - £22.99
Those of you who love Pinot Noir will delight in this very fine example of the Spatburgunder (or Pinot Noir grape) of Germany. The style here is very Burgundian and not at all like the examples one comes across from the New World. There is fantastic complexity in this wine that manifests in deeply layered subtle cherry and strawberry fruit. The silky texture too reminds one of the top wines of Burgundy - close knit, like silk.
Vina Tondonia, Rioja, Spain - £30.50
If you have been to Lopez de Heredia who make this wine will be aware of its being an amazing living example of how the Bordelais made wine in the middle of the 1800's. There is not a sign of any stainless steel here at all - wood is the medium with which this most traditional of Bodegas craft their award winning wines. The ultimate example of the traditional style of top class Rioja.
Chateau Dereszla Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyus (50cl), Hungary - £29.50
Those of you who have seen the film Dean Spanley will be aware of the effect a fine Tokaji can have on the nose - albeit a super sensitive one! If you're a wine lover you really must see this classic film which features a trio of big stars. This dessert wine is sheer nectar as the manageress of a wine shop I used to frequent in Cambridge used to say about Tokaji. If it doesn't get your tail wagging, nothing will.
The great thing about working with wine is that new finds come along all the time - and the world of wine continues to expand as new countries produce better wines from their own grape varieties as well as those from other countries too. I hope you enjoy this selection as much as I do. If so you're in for a serious treat!
