Terra D'Alter Siria/Arinto/Viognier, Alentejo, Portugal £9.99
Portugal continues to be a good hunting ground for excellent value wines, red and white. This blend of grapes made by well respected winemaker Peter Bright, is a juicy and tasty white with a smooth texture, fruity and dried herb flavours with a fresh lemon finish. Surprisingly versatile and gorgeous with caramelised onions in chicken casseroles, or with roast squash, sweet potatoes and sticky, garlicky tomatoes.

Boca do Monte Godello Palomino Fino Blanc, Valdeorras, Portugal £10.75 This Godello Palomino comes from an area known as "Boca do Monte" (mouth of the mountain) to the locals, where an impressive tunnel carved by the Romans in the 2nd Century diverts the mighty river Sil. The winemakers here in Valdeorras defy rock and gravity to plant their vines along the banks of the river. Most vines here are over 50 years of age and planted on two varied soils: shallow slate adds minerality, while loose granite soils retain heat and help strike a balance between sugar and acidity levels. Delicious wine!

Coliman Bonarda/Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina £8.75
We know Argentina is associated with the Malbec, but it is great to see such a good blend with the Bonarda grape. Bonarda keeps it lively and lifts it with some red cherry flavours, as well as the more earthy, bramble feel from the Malbec. Very versatile, equally tasty with pork pie and ploughman's, as with beef casserole.

Franschhoek Cellar 'The Churchyard' Cabernet Sauvignon, Western Cape, South Africa £8.65
Luckily The Oxford Wine Company sell this to a couple of my local restaurants, so I know I have a guaranteed enjoyable glass with my Sunday roast. I love its slightly leafy and lithe blackcurrant aromas, that match well with the signature south African peppery and earthy character.

Kalsa Grillo IGP, Sicily £8.99
The Grillo is one of those fruity white Mediterranean grapes that are full of generous peach, and mango flavours. This has a touch of almond tart taste too. It's dry, medium bodied and lovely with fish pie or duck salad.

Miopasso Primitivo, Puglia, Italy £9.49 The Miopasso range is the brainchild of The Wine People, a company headed by Stefano Girelli of ‘Casa Girelli’ fame. The Wine People’s winemaker, Andrea Valentinuzzi, has created a brand which showcases modern Italian winemaking using local grapes. Different vineyards in both Sicily and Puglia have been handpicked for their quality and characteristics which best suit specific indigenous grape varieties. Sicily and Puglia can produce wines of great quality and exceptional value - the warm climates of both lead to full bodied wines with great fruit and richness. These wines have both quality and great approachability!
