Albariño hails originally from Galicia and Rias Baixas in Spain, first grown in Gisborne, New Zealand in 2009.
Gorgeous little citrus flowers link arms with melon and peach to dance in the sunshine, always maintaining an air of class. Meanwhile lime lingers in the shadows vying for attention.
- 'Albariño to the Spanish, and alvarinho to the Portuguese, has transported itself to the new world, with pockets of this popular grape as far afield as California and Uruguay. It is crammed with off-dry, yet fresh, grapey, floral, nectarine fruit.' - Jane MacQuitty, The Times, July 2017
Much like the duel taking place on the label, the Left Field Gisborne Albariño 2015 has fought its way to the top of the bunch at the International Aromatic Wine Competition 2015 by winning a gold medal and the 'Champion Other Aromatic Trophy'.
Winemaker Richard Painter was thrilled with the trophy win and said it was definitely a coup for the Gisborne region: "All other trophy winners are from Marlborough, as generally the aromatic grape varieties like the cooler climate, but Albariño (originally hailing from Spain and Portugal) is a variety that requires warmer growing conditions to achieve optimal flavour and ripeness, which makes it perfectly suited to Gisborne. The 2015 Left Field Albariño is a lovely crisp, concentrated, and refreshing white wine, just perfect for summer. It's currently the most popular wine at the Te Awa Cellar door and Restaurant and also in my house where there is always a bottle in the fridge," he said.
