- Campania is the home of Naples, Pizza Margherita, and the bejewelled Amalfi coast, as well as some seriously good value wines from the poor, rocky interior. Indigenous varieties like Aglianico, Fiano and Greco can turn out impressive wines on the hillside sites and volcanic soils of the region.
La Guardiense is a cooperative in Campania producing and bottling excellent quality versions of local indigenous grape varieties - their Aglianico, Falanghina, and Fiano were all impressive but what really stood out was the Greco, coming from vines grown on the hills of Benevento.
Though not a high acid grape variety it is one of the most characterful Italian whites, and this one has surprisingly good weight behind it with rich pine nut and butterscotch notes beautifully set off by juicy, tart green apple and pineapple flavours.
