- Robert Bird constructed the Glenvale winery and cellars in 1933 but evidence of occupation stretches back at least 500 years. The original Glenvale winery included concrete fermentation vats that are still used today and have proved ideal for fermenting Esk Valley's award-winning red wines. The thick concrete walls of the winery, built into the hillside have also proven to be a stable and cool environment for maturing wines. Today, Esk Valley Estate is run as an independent Hawkes Bay winery, with its own vineyards and winemaking team. The Esk Valley range receives the care and attention that is normally lavished on Reserve wines. The result is a range of elegant, intensely flavoured wines that are extremely food-friendly.
The grapes for this Syrah are sourced from selected vineyards within the Hawkes Bay, and in the case of our Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Riesling, we source the finest grapes from New Zealand's world famous Marlborough region. This wine is a blend of fruit grown in stony Hawkes Bay vineyard sites. The vines are trained on a VSP trellis and intensively managed, employing shoot thinning, leaf plucking and bunch thinning to produce high quality fruit.
The fruit for this wine was destemmed to concrete open topped fermenters, fermented with indigenous yeasts and then macerated on skins at the completion of fermentation. The young wine then was transferred to barrel for malolactic fermentation and subsequent ageing. After 18 months in barrel the wine is fined with egg whites and bottled.
This Syrah displays classic Hawkes Bay Syrah notes of plums, blackberries, pepper and exotic spice notes with subtle oak integration. It is a medium bodied and food friendly style with excellent ageing potential.
