- Inspired by his father's passion for being close to the vines and the land, David purchased the run down Stellenbosch farm Woodlands (a remainder of the original Edgebaston grant) in 2004. The Finlayson family has returned to its winemaking roots and David and his father have launched the Edgebaston range of wines from this property which boasts 29 hectares of vineyard. A small winery was put into operation in 2009, waving goodbye to the days of rented facilities. David's vision is to build a family operated, ultra premium wine operation focussing on the quality and personality of the wines in the bottle.
The latest from the Edgebaston stable is The Berry Box. And the smart money says this bottle is going to become about as trendy to have on a Sandton or Banty Bay dining table as an iPhone and a set of platinum worry beads. The wine is a blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. And the label and the name says it all: a medley of small berry and fruit flavours including blackcurrant, raspberry, strawberry, mulberry and blackberry combine with a hint of anise and vanilla to give a wine that is instantly gratifying in flavour whilst showing good structure and tannin concentration to allow for some maturation. Bottled under screwcap to ensure freshness.
- 2009 VINTAGE: GOLD MEDAL, IWC 2011.
