Former assistant to the famous producer Eben Sadie, highly gifted and energetic young winemaker Bryan MacRobert makes a few barrels of wine in the Swartland under his own label, Abbotsdale wines. It's so healthy for a region when winemakers are making their own tiny production wines because it helps to make the scene more dynamic. It also helps newcomers to emerge even when they haven't got pots of cash, allowing them to build gradually.

Bryan MacRobert Wines is a small wine producing company located in the Swartland wine region in South Africa. Run by Bryan as the winemaker and Jean-Paul Stuyck as the accountant the two manage the micro-company producing small lots of very high-quality wines. Bryan works closely with high quality, low yielding grape growers to ensure the quality and consistency of his wines.

Bryan's approach is very much that of minimum intervention and less oak presence, and he has a surprising amount of experience for a young winemaker, also crafting impressive terroir-expressive Riojas under his Laventura label in Spain. As he says of that particular project: "I want to make Rioja as it once was. I'm trying to make honest wines," which sums up his approach to all his winemaking, whether it be South African wines or Riojas.

This blend of Shiraz 70%, Mourvedre 15% and Cinsault 15% has a bright and breezy nose filled with black berries, mulberries, cloves and spice, with a medium bodied and very drinkable palate. Layers of fruit and spice, with a fine structure and soft tannins that make it very easy to drink and enjoy. Has potential to age or to drink now. A great example of the Swartland independent approach to making affordable complex wine.

"This cuvée showcases Syrah grown in Abbotsdale, Swartland, which grapes were hand-picked and raised in stainless steel tanks. The wine displays aromas of black fruits such as plum and blackberry, as well as subtle smoky and vegetal notes. Medium-bodied, it unveils itself in a supple and accessible structure" - Neil Pendock, the Cape Wine Academy and Wines of South Africa.
