- Situated on the broad, rolling plateau and foothills of the Southwest Mountains and running parallel with the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west, Barboursville's 900 acres occupy a wide variety of soils with sloping exposures of even greater variety. The winery team is a collaboration of broad expertise - and nearly all of the principal people are from from Italy.
Gianni Zonin is the founding owner and also produces wines in every primary growing region of Italy, in Piemonte, Friuli, Veneto, Lombardy, Puglia, Sicily, and at three estates in Tuscany. Luca Paschina has been Barboursville's resident winemaker since 1990, and holds an extensive record of honours among all his peers in Virginia. Associate winemaker Daniele Tessaro contributes experience from the Collio region of northeast Italy, and Fernando Franco from El Salvador brings valuable experience from California and elsewhere in Virginia, to his 20 continuous years at Barboursville.
The estate took the lead in planting Cabernet Franc in Virginia in 1976, which revealed just how good this variety is when grown in Virginia.
Dark garnet core, brilliant clarity in the glass. Intense, effusively luscious flavors of ripe red berries with caramelised notes of fig, cherry, and plum, elegantly woven together in barrel. Long-finishing and tannically vivid, yet with a remarkably soft palate. Great wine!
