- Viña San Esteban is located in central Chile, near the city of Los Andes, at the mountainous eastern edge of the Aconcagua Valley. The vineyards are beautifully situated along the Aconcagua River and over the foothills of the Andes Mountains, where sunny days and night breezes create the temperature variability needed to reach optimal ripeness of colour and structure in the grapes. San Esteban's distinct geography and climate deliver a one-of-a-kind character to its grapes, which together with the delicate work in the winery, bring forth excellent wines, marked by their origin. The Paidahuen hillside vineyard offers the rocky soil and unique solar exposure necessary to obtain grapes rich in fruit and character. The riverbanks of the Aconcagua River have fluvial soil consisting of fragments of drift stones from the Andes Mountains. The sandy texture of the soil restricts water retention, avoiding excessive vigour and favouring the concentration of aromas and tannins in the grapes. The latest systems of pressing and refrigeration allow for gentle juice extraction and strict temperature control during the fermentation and stabilization of the wine. The Reserve wines are aged in French and American oak barrels from some of the world's most prestigious cooperages.
Carmenère was imported to South America in the 1850s, along with other Bordeaux varieties, prior to the European outbreak of Phylloxera. The largest established vineyards of this variety are in Chile, although many of these were misidentified as Merlot (the two vines share many similarities) for more than a century. French ampelographer Jean Michel Bousiquot discovered the truth in 1994. This fine example has rich plummy red berry fruit and touches of smoke and minerals.
