Ernie Loosen is the world's ambassador for Riesling - a grape thought by many to make some of the finest quality wines on the planet. Ernie ('Dr') Loosen is a hugely characterful speaker and is in high demand worldwide, so it was a real privilege to have him take us through some of his superb range of top class wines from the Mosel and Pfalz in Germany. The Dr. Loosen estate has been in the same family for more than 200 years. When Ernst Loosen (pronounced loh-zen) assumed ownership in 1988, he realized that, with ungrafted vines averaging 60 years old in some of Germany's best-rated vineyards, he had the raw materials to create stunningly intense, world-class wines. This he certainly did and he now produces some of the very finest iconic wines in the world. Amongst a top class line up featuring both dry and sweet wines, Ernie took us through superb dry wines like the Urziger Würzgarten Alte Reben Grosses Gewächs 2010 (£28.99) - a favourite of many on the night, the sublime and utterly gorgeous Dr Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese 2013 (£24.99) and the golden coloured nectar that is the Riesling Beerenauslese 2011 (£14.99) bottled in a special 18.7cl bottle.
