Value for money is something that I always think about when recommending wines to my customers. I think we spend too much time thinking about money in today's world but with wine it is such an important factor given that all wine is a luxury, not a necessity. For this tasting I wanted to show some wines that represented great value for money for under £10.
It's hard to find wines that really deliver at the £5-£7 price point these days but I wanted to see if we could find something under a tenner that still did the job. I succeeded. The Franschoek Chenin Blanc was universally liked and not only did a lot for its price, it was seen as a real alternative to the more mainstream wines of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio.
My two reds also worked well. The De Chansac showed that one can find good wine in France without having to break the bank and the Los Haroldos Malbec delivered so much fruit and character without becoming sweet that it was the overall winner on the night.
