This well known wine region hides a myriad of secrets. Despite the evolving wine scene both inside and outside Rioja, the top traditional producers here have continued to produce sublime mature wines using their tried and tested approach to winemaking. Why is this when the pace of change in the wine world around them is fast? And how did their 'traditional' winemaking techniques come about in the first place?
In this tasting I'll be looking at the extraordinary history of this famous wine producing area and showing some classic top examples of the tradional wines - the big names who have been producing wonderful, fully mature wines since the middle of the 19th century. We'll also have a close look at what actually makes a traditional Rioja and why they continue to be prized, whilst their modern counterparts remain comparitively unknown.
It's quite a story - and having worked in exclusively with Spanish wines for seven years in London I know that the wines will speak for themselves! I'll be showing mainly top wines here with the majority being Reserva and Gran Reservas.
Perfect wines in fact to be tasted in the traditional surroundings of the Turl Street tasting room beneath the shop. Come and join us!
