Deutz Classic Champagne Dinner
Presented by Etienne Defosse
The Cherwell Boathouse Restaurant, Bardwell Road, Oxford OX2 6ST
We put on special Dinner Tastings at the Cherwell Boathouse Restaurant three times a year. This is Oxford's best restaurant in our opinion and one described as an 'Oxford institution' by the Good Food Guide. The wines supplied by us are specially matched to three courses created by head chef Nick Welford and chosen by the Head Sommelier, Brice Guibert. Around 40 people sit at two long tables and the wines are introduced informally by a guest speaker, normally from the winery, as we go through the top quality three course meal.
Deutz are one of the grandest Champagne houses in the village of Ay, where they are near neighbours to Bollinger. Founded in 1838, their finely-crafted range is currently inspiring great critical acclaim, from their outstanding Classic range all the way up to the rare deluxe cuvées, William Deutz and the sublime Blanc de Blancs, Amour de Deutz, which is only released in the very best years. Deutz is making some of the most exciting ranges of any of the Grandes Marques at the moment.
Etienne Defosse from Deutz guided us through five exceptional Champagnes, four served with specially matched dishes created by head chef Nick Welford. We started with the Deutz Brut Classic NV (£38.99) as an aperitif and after hearing about the history of this classic Champagne house moved on to the rare Amour de Deutz 2005 Blanc de Blancs (£135.00) for the first course. Then we tried a comparison of the Brut Vintage 2006 (£63.95) and the famous Cuvée William Deutz 2002 (£99.00). Finally, we moved onto the Brut Rosé NV (£49.50) with dessert. Altogether an impressive line-up and a very special event indeed which was much enjoyed by all present.
