It dominates most of the red wines from the Southern Rhone but it is also of extreme importance in Sardinia and Priorat. It requires a lot of sun to ripen fully but in hotter years, the fruit can become baked and jammy. Concentrated aromas of black cherry, strawberry with hints of aniseed and tobacco. The areas of Rasteau, Banyuls and Maury, produce a "Vin Doux Naturel" from Grenache.
