The mountainous Italian region of Abruzzo sits on the Adriatic coast at a similar latitude to Rome. Known principally for its' red wines from the Montepulciano grape (not to be confused with the place of the same name in Tuscany). These are mostly good value fruit-led styles with flavours of black plums and cherries. Some higher quality examples have been aged in oak barrels. Other reds are made from Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The Abruzzo region also produces white wines from Trebbiano, Falanghina,Malvasia, Moscato, Passerina, Pecorino and Chardonnay.
