A Fistful of Dollars - Wines from the USA
Presented by Theo Sloot

This was the first of my 'Theo's Tasty Tuesday' tastings at The Oxford Wine Café for 2015 and in line with this format this was a fun, humorous and very informal intro to wine. Surprisingly, California is the wine area I've visited the most (after Spain and France of course!) because firstly I have friends there and secondly way back in the mists of time I won a trip there when I was with the Fine Wine Department of Oddbins. They simply flew me out to San Francisco and I found a car waiting for me, a map and an itinerary of visits to make. They also gave me a large amount of dollars in cash and told me to ask for more if I ran out! Naturally I did run out and yes I was instructed to withdraw another large wad of cash for my own use. It was almost too good to be true but everything went according to plan and I saw some very special high quality tiny boutique wineries that were very different from anything I've ever seen elsewhere. So there were plenty of anecdotes to keep everyone entertained and four interesting wines to discuss and taste in detail. The favourite wine of the night for the 30 customers present was definitely the Peter Franus Merlot 2009 which though £27.99 delivered wonderfully ultra smooth classic buttery fruit to the palate and displayed a layer of creamy toasty oak - classic Napa Merlot at its best really.
