Galpin Peak Pinot Noir, Bouchard Findlayson 2006, Walker Bay, South Africa – £19.75

As those of you who have been following this column will know, Pinot Noir is my all-time favourite grape variety and I have fallen in love again! But after a long flirtation with the Pinots of New Zealand (which I still love) I’ve discovered this superb example from South Africa. Having long been a fan of Anthony Hamilton Russell’s wines it has been interesting to see how Bouchard Findlayson (just round the corner) have really got their act together in recent years – this is a cracking Pinot with all the correct attributes – smooth texture, lovely layered fruit, depth and concentration. Just gorgeous!

SMorella Old Vines Primitivo 2004, Puglia, Italy – £29.95

This is something very special. The wine is made from hand selected, extremely concentrated grapes from very low yielding traditional bush vines that are at least 75 years old and therefore produce superb fruit. Vinified in a traditional but highly precise way, the result is a spicy, ultra rich, highly concentrated wine of fantastic flavour and style that sings to you of prunes, liquorice and chocolate. This is an experience not to be missed!

Scotchmans Hill Shiraz 2006, Geelong, Australia
– £12.99

Geelong is not far from the famous Mornington Peninsula and is perfect for cool climate grape growing and this really shows in this really top class Shiraz which is very different from those massively weighty versions that are made in the Barossa Valley. This wine has lovely cool aromatic fruit, good concentration without being over heavy and is as clean as a whistle (and kept that way by being sealed with a screwcap). Proving immensely popular at tastings I would really recommend this delightful and complex Shiraz.

Bourgogne Chardonnay, Cave de Prisse 2006, Cote Maconnais, Burgundy – £8.75

At first glance this wine might seem a little out of place compared with the other wines here, but do not be deceived, this is good stuff! The Cave de Prisse consistently produces good crisp and minerally wines and winemaker Georges Brichon certainly knows how to express his terroir through his wines. This wonderful example from the relatively warm 2006 vintage has lovely ripe yet crisp fruit and delivers far more than one might expect from a Burgundy at this price – superb value for money!

Josmeyer ‘Le Dragon’ Riesling 2004, Wintzenheim, Alsace – £18.89

Josmeyer is one of the top names in Alsace, and rightly so. Situated just west of the Colmar, their 25 hectares stretch across prime wine growing parcels of land. ‘Le Dragon’ is a wonderful example of great Riesling, showing complex fruit with hints of spice, slatebed minerality and superb acidity which perfectly balances its slightly off dry fruit – top class wine.

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru, Vielles Vignes 2004, Vincent Giradin, Burgundy - £29.95

A stunning Puligny from Giradin, this is from the cool 2004 vintage and is a finely structured, a minerally and very pure wine that is crisp, fresh and complex all at the same time. The wine’s lifted aromatics give it a lengthy finish and its rich buttery fruit develops well on the palate – truly fine wine.

the bbq 12 bottle MIXED CASE OFFER £98.00

After last year you might think that the concept of ‘summer’ may not actually exist. Certainly I hardly made it out in my boat on the Thames at all last year – although it did come in very handy in the kitchen during the floods for getting me from the fridge to the cooker and back! However I did manage to get quite a number of BBQs in (but then I’ve been known to have a BBQ in the depths of winter).

2 bottles of each – special price of £98.00 - until end September 2008.

  • Silly Mid On Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon 2006 – from the Jim Barry winery who know a thing or two about making good wine – not to mention cricket!
  • Domaine de Beaumalric 2005 – a soft and really tasty Rhone dry red – not to be confused with the sweet wine from the same area.
  • The Cover Drive Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 – another cricketing wine from Jim Barry. This is top class Aussie Cab at its minty best.
  • Woodstock Botrytis Sweet White 2004 (37.5cl) – a perfect dessert wine to go with summer sweets and strawberries – if you haven’t already drunk the Prosecco with them!
