This special offer contains a number of wines that I’ve discovered and rediscovered recently on my travels. These are all delicious wines with real character that are all carefully made and drinking very well now. They’re sure to set your taste buds tingling with pleasure (they certainly do mine!).
Contains 1 bottle of each wine:
Esk Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2012, Marlborough, New Zealand - £10.99
I’m not normally a great fan of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc but this one has brought me back to an old haunting ground. It’s different from many wines from this area in that it’s just so incredibly intense and nervy – in fact it’s positively vibrant and virtually vibrating with mouthwatering fruit that’s put together in a surprisingly (for this area) traditional and handcrafted fashion. Very good winemaking indeed!
Breaux Vineyards Viognier 2009, Virginia - £18.89
An old favourite that’s still great. Breaux have over 100 acres planted to 18 different grape varieties and is an impressive estate to visit who pay careful attention to detail in their winemaking. This has flavours of orange blossom, peach and honey and is crisp, super clean with nervy acidity that makes this wine really refreshing. This is one of the two grape varieties that Virginia produces at world class quality levels – lovely wine!
Vire-Clesse, Albert Bichot 2011, Burgundy - £14.50
Although the family can be traced back to 1350 in Burgundy, it was not until 1831 that the Bichot's got into the wine business. Success came quickly and by 1840, the house was exporting to the UK and other countries. Today this passionate family business is run by the sixth generation Albéric Bichot who makes very focused wines that are crisp and refreshing whilst having a delightfully elegant style to them - this lovely white Burgundy is a classic example of this excellent Bichot style that has won him many awards.
Morande Gran Reserva Pinot Noir 2010, Casablanca Valley, Chile - £12.99
Ace winemaker Ricardo Baettig makes this serious, cutting edge Pinot from the cool climate Casablanca Valley and it’s by far the best example of this notoriously hard to grow grape variety I’ve yet come across from Chile. It’s my firm belief that Chile will be making New Zealand standard Pinot Noir in the next few years and this is the beginning – wonderful wine and my current fave rave! Try it at our Oxford Wine Café by the glass and see what I mean!
Viña Ardanza Rioja Reserva 2004, La Rioja Alta, Spain - £21.95
Another big all time favourite. This has been my favourite Rioja since my days in the Spanish wine trade and indeed one of my all time favourite reds – full stop. La Rioja Alta continues to be one of the benchmarks for traditionally produced Rioja wine and one sip of this shows you why - intense and complex to the nose with wild berry aromas, blended with hints of coconut, cinnamon, tobacco and leather. It’s full bodied and well structured to the palate, with silky and enveloping tannins. Superb wine at a bargain price.
Kalleske Clarry’s Grenache/Shiraz/Mourvedre 2011, Barossa Valley - £22.50
“Clarry’s wines were one of the greatest revelations of my Australian tastings.” Robert Parker
Whatever one thinks of good old Bob I would agree with him on this wine in particular. This classic Rhone style blend is named after Clarence ‘Clarry’ Kalleske who worked the vineyards from the 1920s until his retirement in the 1990s. All their grapes are sourced from their own vineyards in the north-western Barossa and the resulting wine is just superb – very full and amazingly rich with a wonderful white pepper nose and deep, layered fruit. Gorgeous!
Special discounted case price: £169.00 (Normal price £199.56)
Contains 3 bottles of each wine
Each year, Oz Clarke, Britain's favourite wine writer and personality chooses his Top Wines in his Wine Buying Guide. This year he has chosen five of our wines to include in his 2013 guide which was published in October 2012. We have included four of these in this great value specially discounted mixed case offer:
2010 Garnacha Blancha, La Miranda de Secastilla, Somontano, Spain - £11.55
“This comes from Somontano, a cool area up near the Pyrenees – and you don’t really expect to see the warm climate Garnacha Blanca grape growing there. But the restrained high altitude produces top flavours: rich but dry apple and peach, a texture of wax and syrup and a warmth of biscuit and sun-baked nuts.”
2010 Txomin Etxaniz Getaria (Txakoli), Getriako Txakolina, Spain - £19.99
“A very fresh, tingling style, surprisingly deep, dense even, somehow mixing baked apple flesh and dates with the chewiness of apple peel and the nostril-twitching aroma of lemon zest. Intense, acid, spritzy-fresh and fascinating.”
2010 Syrah Woodthorpe Vineyard, Te Mata Estate, Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand - £16.99
(Listed as one of Oz Clarke’s top 5 Syrah/Shiraz wines)
“This has just a suggestion of lily-flower scent, but rather more of the sap of the lily stem, the crunchiness of black pepper and celery just dusted with glittery quartz, then soaked in ripe loganberry and raspberry fruit and the chocolate sweetness of carob.”
2008 Petit Verdot, Veritas Vineyard, Virginia, USA - £17.99
“This has all the deep, black Petit Verdot character, but the fruit is a sweet, rich mix of black plum and blueberry, fattened up with brioche pastry and chocolate and freshened by a nice nip of acidity, along with a dusting of old kitchen spice.”
Marcia Waters MW 6 Bottle Mixed Case Offer for Winter 2013
Special discounted price £43.00 (normal price £50.88)
Here are three summery whites, one rose and a couple of reds.
Domaine de Maubet Sauvignon/Colombard, Côtes de Gascogne 2011
One of my house wines at home, refreshing and a touch spicy. Great with lunch, lighter suppers and brilliant on its own as an aperitif.
Picpoul de Pinet Domaines de Felines Jourdan
Fresh and steely, the wine is like a full-bodied Muscadet, full of summer holiday memories and a perfect match for mediterranean fish soup.
K-Naia Verdejo, Bodegas Naia, Rueda
A new favourite of mine, this area of Spain produces fresh and flavoursome whites from Verdejo and Viura grapes often with some Sauvignon like this one. Think of passion fruit, kiwi and guava.
Pierre & Papa Rose, Vin de Pays
A very uncomplicated, quaffing rose from France, just what you need for summer parties.
Calusari Pinot Noir, Cramele Recas
Another of my regular recommendations from the fantastically good value Romania. Light to medium bodied, some bright cherry fruit and a hint of oak. Surprisingly good with Caesar salad.
Casa Silva Colección Carmenère, Colchagua Valley
A medium bodied red with lovely soft tannins with a balanced freshness with an earthy cherry and blackberry flavour. One for the barbecue.
