Spanish Sensations Tasting

It was always going to be a bit of a gamble, putting four white wines on the tasting list for an event held at the beginning of British summertime! Luckily, the weather didn't disappoint, and when seven o'clock came around, there were twenty-two thirsty individuals ready to taste our six Spanish wines.
We enjoyed an impromptu demonstration of the traditional method for pouring Txakoli, our first wine, from a height. As beginners, we will freely admit that rather more went on the floor than in the glass, but I think we can give ourselves full marks for effort!
Deciding that in order to really understand the wines of Spain, you must also understand the country's food, we provided some tasty morsels to match to our samples. Two highlights were the prawns which combined so beautifully with the fresh saline character of our Albarino, and a traditional potato frittata combined with a delicately oaked Garnacha Blanca.
Of course, a Spanish wine tasting couldn't be complete without at least one example of the country's most famous red wine, and our Contino Rioja Reserva certainly didn't disappoint. Rich, velvety and lush, all we were missing was some freshly barbecued lamb chops to match with it! Unfortunately our cooking skills haven't quite got there yet...!
