- Other info: Niepoort was originally a small, high quality port lodge in Vila Nova, without any of its own vineyards. Then, in 1987 Dirk joined his father in the family business, and things changed. They acquired two Quintas in the Douro, Nápoles and Carril, and in 1990 began making table wines: Robustus, in 1990 was experimental, and from 1991 it became Redoma. To Redoma Tinto Dirk has gradually added a stable of wines, including the more affordable Drink Me Douro, Vertente, two wonderful Redoma whites, two icon reds in Batuta and Charme, and most recently a Riesling-style white called Tiara. Niepoort has now become a model of modern winemaking for both their ports and table wines. This Douro Red is a blend of the Douro varietals Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cao and Tinta Barroca, all grapes originating from the Cima Corgo-region, the heart of the Douro Valley between Régua and Pinhão. Dirk Niepoort deliberately chooses a multitude of small vineyards from different slopes and side valleys which deliver differing characters due to their individual terroirs. ‘Assembling wines with different profiles in order to create an especially complex final blend is the art and tradition of the Douro,’ says Dirk. With Drink Me, Dirk presents a red wine that shows all the character of the Douro - deep rich fruit, vibrant acidity and mature tannins.

- Press: 88/100, Wine Spectator, November 2009 - 'Firm and muscular, with a leafy edge to the intense berry and dark cherry flavours. Interesting ripe citrus notes fill the midpalate, and this finishes with portobello mushroom and spice notes. Drink now through 2014'.
