- Other info: Federico Paternina Josué founded Bodegas Paternina in 1896 in Ollauri, in the Rioja Alta region. Initially there were three cellars and approximately 1,000 American oak casks in which to age the wine. After brief expansion in the 1920s, the winery spent the best part of the 20th century producing moderately priced, everyday drinking Rioja. In 1984, it was acquired by Marcos Eguizábal Ramírez, who began a programme of investment and expansion, purchasing vineyards in both Jerez de la Frontera and Ribera del Duero. Today, Paternina makes a range of wines under a variety of labels, but the quest for quality and elegance has always benn maintained. The main cellars are 75 metres deep and sit under the town of Ollauri. The Monte Haro Crianza was the favourite wine of Ernest Hemingway.
