- Other info: The stone was discovered in 1869, and called the Star of South Africa, because it was the first large diamond find in the country. On hearing of the stone, the Earl of Dudley purchased it, and had it mounted on a head ornament with 95 smaller diamonds to give to the countess of Dudley, hence it became known as Dudley’s diamond!
