Adi Badenhorst Mixed Case Offer
Ref. 11007
These are some of the very best and characterful wines we have ever tasted. Adi Badenhorst, surfer, parrot breeder, woeful Elvis impersonator and multi award winning winemaker at Rustenberg for nearly a decade, has flown the nest and is going it alone (almost). He has co-founded AA Badenhorst Family Wines with his cousin, Hein, and father, Andre, on a small piece of earth in the Paardeberg, Swartland in South Africa. Here he hand crafts amazing wines made from near organic grapes grown on ancient bush vines and fermented using very basic equipment - and the result is astonishing. These are very serious wines that you won't see at the local supermarket!
AA BADENHORST SECATEURS CHENIN BLANC 2009
JANCIS ROBINSON - ‘A fabulous bargain. Very fresh, floral and honeyed with masses of intensity and flavour (presumably because of the age of the vines) but with a satisfyingly dry finish. Over delivers in the most delightful way – 17/20.’
AA BADENHORST SECATEURS RED 2007
JANCIS ROBINSON – ‘Another bargain, a blend of Shiraz with Cabernet, Grenache and Carignan. Dense, soft, round. Very gentle and easy with the merest hint of molasses – 16.5/20.
AA BADENHORST FAMILY WHITE 2007
JANCIS ROBINSON – ‘Full, honeyed but not fat nose. Pretty exciting. Masses of acidity at this point – from the Sauvignon and Chenin? Still very youthful but complex and promising. Still chewy but with real bottom – 16.5+/20.’
AA BADENHORST FAMILY RED 2006
JANCIS ROBINSON – ‘Seriously good South African red; I kept coming back to it. There is such confidence and complexity here (even after a week in an opened bottle). Some minerals, no greenness, not a hint of burnt rubber! Very serious, thoughtfully made wine that is still chewy but is SO sophisticated. Limpid and lovely texture. Layers. Leather, treacle, no sweetness, some minerality, schist? But it’s cool overall. Not quite ready but a coiled spring – 18/20.’
