Nyetimber - World Class Champagne Quality UK Sparkling Wine
Presented by Neil Irvine
The Oxford Wine Café, 38 South Parade, Oxford OX2 7JN
The Oxford Wine Company has stocked Nyetimber's fantastic range of high quality English sparkling wines for many years as they were one of the first wineries to start producing quality fizz in this country, and in the light of the rising popularity of this category it made perfect sense to invite Neil Irvine over to present a tasting in the Café. It turned out to be a particularly good move as Neil is a great public speaker with that rare gift of being able to talk about technical matters whilst getting people to understand and also appreciate what he's saying. He told us that Nyetimber are in the fortunate position to own one hundred percent of their vineyards (highly unusual in the UK) and all their wines are produced from the 152 hectares they have planted at the best sites in West Sussex and Hampshire. The chalk seam that supplies Champagne grapes with the perfect green sand and chalky soil is the very same that runs under the lee of the South Downs. Nyetimber's vineyards were the first to be devoted exclusively to the holy trinity of Champagne grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir. Neil had brought along a number of wines that we don't stock and the full range of wines were just stunning with the Classic Cuvée (£29.99) coming out as the wine of the tasting - simply because of its sheer quality for money. This was the fullest tasting at the Café of the year so far with a capacity crowd of 46 people. Neil presented with great flair, knowledge and humour and a great and educational time was had by all.
