I love the wines of South Africa but more than that, I love the story and history behind them. For a country with such a long tradition of growing the vine their success and quality is relatively new. For this tasting I wanted to cover some of that history and discuss why it is only in the last 30 or so years that things have really started to happen.
This was a classic masterclass style with lots of tall tales and humour, including the idea of swimming in a wine lake and what variety would be suited to that. Each wine showed well and really contributed to the overall narrative that South Africa is exciting, different and creative. The star of the show however was the absolutely magnificent Boekenhoutskloof Syrah. This wine had a wonderful depth of black fruit, gentle spice and well handled oak across the nose and palate and was incredibly smooth, rich and long lasting. Superb.
