| Where
did you first develop an interest in wine? Whilst working for Grover Vineyards, I was required to talk a lot about wine. For me, opening a bottle of wine means enjoying the fruits of a different country whilst sitting in the comfort of your own home. Where was your first job? My first job was with a mushroom producer/exporter called Agro Dutch Foods Limited in 1999. Putting what I learned in the classroom into practice was a wonderful experience which wouldn’t have been possible without the guidance of my colleagues. Describe your role at the Oxford Wine Company Basically operations and warehousing. Another aspect of the job is logistics and supply chain management. The job has made me smile regularly, which wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my colleagues. What I like most about the job is that one’s views are heard and implemented. Needless to say, the best part of the job is to pamper one’s taste buds before the consumer pampers theirs! What recent trends have you spotted amongst your customers? As more and more wines produced today are made to be drunk young and many are less complex than in the past, a whole new generation are being introduced to a more upfront style of wine. Also customers are more quality conscious and more discerning today. What is the worst bottle of wine you have ever tasted? The one I paid a fortune for in the restaurant which was nowhere close to the description on the wine list! Thankfully I can’t remember its name. And the best? That’s a difficult one! I am a great lover of crisp refreshing wines such as Sauvignon Blanc. I like the Sancerre Cherrier that we stock and in particular a Sauvignon from Marlborough called Nautilus which has a very steely crispiness to it and a long after taste. Its one of a kind and I strongly recommend it. If you weren’t in the wine trade, which career might you have chosen? I am glad I am not a rocket scientist! I would have loved to be involved in the field of Horticultural science though - helping find new ways of producing environmentally safe foods. Another area of interest is wildlife conservation. I have actively campaigned for the cause of tiger conservation back in India. Who would you invite to a dinner party and why? Undoubtedly Del Boy from Only Fools and Horses. What a choker you might say! Who wouldn’t like old Del to keep you company over a serious bottle of wine? Mon dieu!! Most memorable wine related moment? Tasting a selection of Dom Perignon vintages at a recent tasting. A truly remarkable experience. What will you drink this weekend? A bottle of our new Menatou Salon 2003 from Leon Vatan - really excellent wine. What interests do you have outside wine? Apart from good food, good wine and good conversation my interests are cooking, reading and cycling. |
