What can I say about the wonderful wines of Pulenta? That their Gran Corte is one of my all-time favourite wines that I drink at home with wonderful medium-rare roast beef on a regular basis? That I love the big bottle it come in that never gives away how much it has in it? (I’ve turned it upside down when convinced that it’s finished many times and, hey presto, out comes more wine from the eternal spring! Though it’s only fair to say that I’ve had the opposite experience too – not even the merest drop comes out of the bottle and then begins the terrible line of thought, do we open another one…?).
But the Pulenta story is not just about the Gran Corte. They produce an amazing range of wines gown around Alto Agrelo in Mendoza, and own 135 hectares of vineyards including large plots in the finest sub regions of Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley. Many of these vineyards are situated at altitudes of between 3000 and 3,500 feet, which tempers the Mendoza heat and makes for more refined and balanced wines. All vineyards are operated on an organic basis and are irrigated from natural melted Andes snow water. It’s a family affair all right – the Pulenta family began making wine over a century ago, in 1912, while the Luján de Cuyo plantation was only later added in 1992. Eduardo and Hugo Pulenta are currently in charge, having taking over from their father, Antonio, and it’s Eduardo that’s coming over from Argentina to show us their stunning range. It’s a case of be there or be square (as we used to say back in the good old 60s) – you can be sure that I will be in the front row! Theo
