Join us in our Turl Street cellar for a tasting of the wines of Esk Valley – plus one very special extra! Esk Valley is one of our favourite New Zealand producers, with a range of aromatic whites as well as some very good quality red wines. Situated in the north of Hawke’s Bay, Esk Valley’s philosophy is hands-on winemaking with a focus on quality.
The Estate began life in the 1930s when it was established under the name of Glenvale by Englishman Robert Bird. Fast-forward half a century, and Esk Valley was bought by Sir Joe Fistionich – owner of Villa Maria. Today Esk Valley Estate is run as an independent winery, with its own vineyards and winemaking team – though still in the hands of Villa Maria. And speaking of Villa Maria – we’ve got a real treat for the final wine of this tasting…
Representing the pinnacle of Villa Maria’s winemaking achievements is their Ngakirikiri The Gravels - on the shelf at £94. From the ‘once in a lifetime’ Hawke’s Bay vintage of 2013, this Bordeaux blend sets a new benchmark for quality for the producer, and is intended to be made only in the most exceptional vintages.
To take us through this range of wines, we are lucky enough to have Angela Lewis – a true expert on the wines of Esk Valley and Villa Maria, having spent three decades working with the two companies. This promises to be a great tasting – we hope to see you there!
