Château Musar are the estate responsible for showing the world the power and potential of Lebanese wine. Vines have been cultivated in the Bekaa Valley for over six thousand years, but it was not until the 1980s that heads in the industry began to turn, all thanks to the determination of Serge Hochar.
Serge Hochar, who sadly passed away in 2014, spent years learning from other highly esteemed winemakers – particularly in Bordeaux – whilst striving to create a wine that reflected the unique terroir of the Bekaa Valley. Serge believed in capturing in his wines the beauty of what nature offered. This philosophy is the foundation of Château Musar and in 2006 they acquired organic certification. A minimal intervention approach is taken in the vineyards and the winery; the family are modest pioneers in the quality natural wine world.
Lebanon is a country roughly the size of Wales, which enjoys a long coastal border with the Mediterranean Sea to the west, to the East borders with Syria and Israel in the South. The Bekaa Valley is Lebanon’s most important farming region with a vast variety of soils and microclimates. The vineyards of Château Musar are located at high altitude on mostly calcareous, gravel and stoney soils. They experience warm, dry summers and thanks to the impact of the mountains a good diurnal range; the winters often bring snow allowing the vines to hibernate. All these conditions are not too dissimilar to areas of France and so grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Cinsault and Carignan thrive.
Our host for the evening will be Elliot O’Mara who has worked with Château Musar for nearly three years and glows with passion for these memorable wines. Elliot will be taking us through six wines including three vintages of Château Musar Red and their 1998 Musar White (if you haven’t tried this – Wow! Get Ready!).
