Now here’s a very special tasting event that has literally never happened before! We have persuaded Peter Finlayson, the winemaker of Bouchard Finlayson (one of South Africa’s great wineries), to come over to show us a vertical tasting of his personal favourite of all the wines he has made over the years: Galpin Peak Pinot Noir. Peter’s aim is to highlight the aging potential of Hemel en Aarde Galpin Peak Pinot Noir over 13 years, and to this end we will be seeing no less than seven vintages of this iconic wine: 2004, 2005 (from magnum), 2008, 2010, 2013, 2015, 2017. These are extremely rare wines that Peter is bringing over from his own private reserve and therefore a real privilege to taste. As a result the only wine for sale on the night will be the current release vintage, 2017.

Galpin Peak Pinot Noir:

The Pinot Noir grape variety is unique as it displays both a delicacy and richness, but it is often quoted as depicting little varietal character of its own – rather expressing the terroir upon which it is grown. Hence, it carries the crown of being the most terroir-expressive of all grape varieties. The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley in South Africa represents that unique combination of soil and climate that exists in only a handful of places where the exact balance provides the perfect expression of this elusive grape. A total of eight vineyards, each with a unique contribution to the wine’s complexity, are picked by hand and cooled overnight, before being destemmed. Following fermentation by certified organic yeasts, each parcel is pressed individually and transferred to French oak barrels. After eleven months maturation, the final blend is assembled in tank and bottled following four months of natural clarification.
