Captivating Cabernet Sauvignon Tasting. Thursday 19/02/14.

I have never been the world's biggest fan of Cab Sauv. It just doesn't do it for me. I always think it has built a huge reputation by using Merlot as a crutch. If you have to use Merlot as a crutch, well... As with the Syrah tasting earlier this year I chose wines from around the world to really try to get under the skin of this variety. The cheaper wines were considered pleasant but actually quite average lacking anything particularly distinctive.
Once we hit the big time things changed with America, France and Spain showing some incredibly dense, complex and flavoursome wines. I expected the Dufort-Vivens 2009 from Margaux to be the star performer of the evening but I was wrong. Most of the tasters really took price and value for money into account and as a result the overall winner was the sophisticated and incredibly elegant Eberle from California. I've never been a big fan of Californian wines either...
